Before this he had an extensive career<br \/>\nwith GEA Group, particularly within its marine business unit.<br \/>\nThorwesten Vent is a manufacturer of explosion venting devices,<br \/>\nlaunching the first self-reclosing explosion vents. Cement sector<br \/>\nclients represent around 80% of the company\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Becker<\/strong> founded robecco GmbH in 1995. The company<br \/>\nis engaged in the field of inerting systems for industrial processes.<br \/>\nIt began working in the cement sector in 1999 and the sector now<br \/>\nrepresents 70% of its client base. It was the first supplier to offer a<br \/>\ncomplete gas detection and inerting system package to the global<br \/>\ncement sector.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-1akp5ot-cd996e04a19a8ecb5d854ce7fa80d076\">\n.flex_column.av-1akp5ot-cd996e04a19a8ecb5d854ce7fa80d076{\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-1akp5ot-cd996e04a19a8ecb5d854ce7fa80d076 av_three_fourth  avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_one_fourth  el_before_av_horizontal_gallery  avia-builder-el-last  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding  '     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-k60fchb1-a071a64265f63c51d821ebdd179d2fcc '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Global Cement (GC)<\/strong>: What were your first experiences with alternative fuels (AF) in cement?<br \/>\n<strong>Robert Becker (RB)<\/strong>: The first time that robecco worked with a cement sector client regarding inerting systems for alternative fuels was in 2007. Theclient was Titan Cement, which wanted to use dried sewage sludge and other AF materials at its Thessaloniki plant in Greece. The plant installed a feeding\u00a0system from Schenck Process and robecco installed gas analysers to monitor methane (CH4) generation\u00a0and any carbon monoxide (CO) from smouldering fires. To extinguish smoldering fires and to prevent\u00a0explosions a CO2 inerting system was installed.<br \/>\nAt this time there was insufficient literature on the use of inerting systems for such a fuel, so robecco and the client had to carefully analyse the system. We performed a lot of tests and made very small changes to the industrial system to figure out safe operating procedures for monitoring and inerting systems with sewage sludge and other AF materials. This case-study still delivers us good information today and has helped the company install similar systems elsewhere.<br \/>\n<strong>Berthold Bussieweke (BB)<\/strong>: Thorwesten Vent\u2019s first<br \/>\nexperience with alternative fuels was also with sewage sludge, at a European cement plant in the early\u00a02010s.<br \/>\n<strong>GC<\/strong>: How has the approach to AF safety changed\u00a0over the years?<br \/>\n<strong>RB<\/strong>: We have seen significant developments\u00a0with alternative fuels safety over the past 15<br \/>\nyears. The most safety-conscious world region is in Europe, where I am involved with<br \/>\nthe development of EN 15281, Guidance on\u00a0Inerting for the Prevention of Explosions<br \/>\nand Fire. A new standard DIN EN ISO\u00a020024 was also published for the safe handling and storage of solid biofuel pellets.<br \/>\nWith some <strong>notable<\/strong> exceptions like\u00a0North and Central America, many other\u00a0world regions do not view AF safety,\u00a0indeed fuel safety, with the same degree of importance. Of course the other\u00a0exceptions are the big players, Holcim,\u00a0HeidelbergCement, Cemex and so on. They<br \/>\nalways follow best practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BB<\/strong>: At the moment the lack of attention\u00a0paid to fuel explosion safety is being exacerbated. The hazards of coal dust explosion\u00a0are known to everybody but the hazards\u00a0of AFs creating explosive atmospheres is\u00a0often underestimated and neglected. When\u00a0a new cement producer builds a plant in particular in a developing market it often opts for\u00a0the low cost option, which results in a non-effective\u00a0explosion protection concept. Unfortunately,<br \/>\nstandards and regulations are rarely followed with\u00a0such projects. Multiplied accross many projects in\u00a0developing regions, this phenomenon threatens the\u00a0overall safety level of the global cement industry.<br \/>\n<strong>GC<\/strong>: How does AF safety differ from fossil fuel\u00a0safety?<br \/>\n<strong>RB<\/strong>: Every AF has different ignition and explosion\u00a0characteristics. For example dried sewage sludge,\u00a0plastic wastes and wood pellets can be even more\u00a0explosive than coal. However, while everyone\u00a0knows that coal dust explodes, this behaviour is not assumed of alternative fuels.\u00a0Unfortunately this is demonstrated by\u00a0numerous sewage sludge and wood pellet\u00a0explosions in the energy sector.\u00a0In terms of handling, the main differences between inerting systems with\u00a0AF-based systems compared to coal or\u00a0petcoke is the absence of direct grinding\u00a0processes. In addition alternative fuels are\u00a0often less dense, meaning that storage silos\u00a0and warehouses are larger in volume. This\u00a0presents some differences in the configuration of inerting systems, but none of the\u00a0changes is insurmountable. robecco has<br \/>\nbuilt up experience in the proper design of\u00a0such systems over the years.<br \/>\n<strong>BB<\/strong>: When installing a venting system,\u00a0explosion characteristics of the fuel also\u00a0affect the required venting area. Coal, petcoke,\u00a0lignite, bituminous coal and all alternative fuels<br \/>\nhave different parameters, with regard to explosive\u00a0characteristics. If you do not consider the correct\u00a0values you may design a venting system that is not\u00a0safe. The best option is increasingly to prepare for\u00a0the worst possible scenario.<br \/>\n<strong>RB<\/strong>: Another issue is that AF supplies are unreliable, indeed some fuels are seasonal. Whenever an\u00a0AF changes, the operator must adjust the detection\u00a0settings and alarms to reflect the change in fuel.\u00a0This is related to O2 limits, CH4 limits and other<br \/>\nparameters within the system. Using robecco\u2019s\u00a0systems, the client can select the fuel being used on the control panel or even a smartphone. The system will then adjust the point at which there is a\u00a0response. The same is the case when a fuel changes\u00a0appreciably in terms of calorific value, for example\u00a0due to changes in moisture content. This could affect the behaviour of dried sewage sludge.\u00a0I have seen cases in the cement sector in which<br \/>\nthe customer has failed to change the inerting system settings when changing the fuel. The user can\u00a0be happily unaware that the system is suddenly<br \/>\ndangerous. This was the case in Egypt, when it transitioned from heavy fuel oil to petcoke and then\u00a0coal in the mid 2010s. Everything was fine with the\u00a0petcoke, which has a fairly low volatility. But then\u00a0when producers switched onwards to coal, they\u00a0experienced the first fires and, unfortunately, explosions too, simply because the monitoring systems\u00a0had not been adjusted.<br \/>\n<strong>GC<\/strong>: How do changing volumes of AF challenge\u00a0your businesses?<br \/>\n<strong>RB<\/strong>: For the storage silos of 2000-3000m3, sizes typically seen in the cement sector, we can guarantee\u00a0that our inerting systems operate effectively and\u00a0rapidly, eliminating the potential for smouldering fires and explosions. However, some sectors,\u00a0for example waste to energy or power plants that\u00a0use wood pellets, the volumes are much higher,<br \/>\nperhaps as high as 40,000m3. This poses significant\u00a0challenges for the systems in terms of the speed at\u00a0which we can deliver inert gases, as well as how\u00a0much gas can actually be stored. This is an issue that\u00a0could come to play in cement in the coming years.<br \/>\n<strong>BB<\/strong>: From Thorwesten Vent\u2019s perspective, closed\u00a0storage facilities are growing in the cement sector, as well as in the energy sector. The larger the\u00a0silo, the more difficult it is to observe smouldering\u00a0fires. Wood pellets, for example, are a particularly\u00a0challenging fuel to design a properly-functioning\u00a0explosion venting solution for. Silo volumes of tens<br \/>\nof thousands of m3 often lead to unmanageable,\u00a0hazardous situations in terms of fire or explosion\u00a0incidents. Overall volumes should be limited to appropriate sizes.<br \/>\n<strong>GC<\/strong>: How will increased use of pelletised SRF,\u00a0sewage sludge, biogases and hydrogen affect your\u00a0businesses going forward?<br \/>\n<strong>RB<\/strong>: We do not expect major challenges from the<br \/>\nuse of grinding pelletised fuels, as these are similar in characteristics to the fossil fuels and AF that\u00a0we already deal with. Similarly sewage sludge is\u00a0a known fuel for robecco. However, it will be increasingly available in the future. In Europe there\u00a0is already a ban on spreading it on farmland. This\u00a0could expand to other regions. Biogas is not a factor\u00a0in the cement sector at the moment, as it is mainly\u00a0used by the farmers that generate it.<br \/>\nFinally, hydrogen is a clear future fuel. In the\u00a0EU there is clear political will to direct hydrogen\u00a0towards steel and cement production, among others. It is not clear today what will need to be done\u00a0regarding the safe storage and firing of hydrogen.\u00a0robecco is looking into this area now to try to get\u00a0a headstart on its competitors. We are also keen\u00a0to hear about standards for the use of hydrogen in\u00a0industrial processes.<br \/>\n<strong>BB<\/strong>: I think, regardless of the specific fuels used in\u00a0the future, both of our companies have a duty to\u00a0educate the market as to how to look after safety\u00a0of AF. This includes work on regulations such as\u00a0DIN ISO 20024 (safe handling and storage of solid\u00a0biofuel pellets in commercial and industrial applications). This is now more important than in\u00a0the past, as there will be a drive within the sector\u00a0towards increased use of biogenic AF, wood, sewage\u00a0sludge, agricultural byproducts, all of which carry\u00a0significant explosion risks.\u00a0This is because biogenic fuels offer lower CO2\u00a0emissions than other types of AF. In the EU this is\u00a0already having an effect on AF selection due to the\u00a0high cost of emitting CO2 under the EU Emissions\u00a0Trading Scheme (ETS), currently Euro80-90\/t.\u00a0There are going to be a lot of new technologies in\u00a0the pipeline for the future, for example technologies to grind wood pellets to a fine powder, a very\u00a0explosive combination. Overall, we will need to\u00a0keep developing and experimenting with new fuels\u00a0to help the global cement sector realise its goals, all\u00a0within safe parameters of course!<br
